Mumbai: Sony SAB’s Hastinapur Ke Veer takes viewers into the world before the events of the Mahabharata, exploring the stories, relationships and ambitions that shaped the epic. Actor Aabhas Mehta plays King Jarasandha, a powerful ruler known for his strength, capabilities and intelligence.
In an exclusive conversation, Mehta spoke about stepping into the world of mythology, bringing Jarasandha to life, his distinctive look, his bond with the younger artistes and the lessons audiences can draw from the character.
Q. What interests you most about playing the powerful character of Jarasandha in Hastinapur Ke Veer?
Aabhas Mehta: What fascinates me most about playing Jarasandha is his immense strength and his important place in this larger epic. Being part of a story connected to the Mahabharata is a special opportunity for me. Jarasandha is known for his power and might, so portraying such a character gives me the chance to explore and understand many different dimensions of him.
Q. Hastinapur Ke Veer explores the period before the Mahabharata. How does this give you a different opportunity to portray Jarasandha?
Aabhas Mehta: That is what makes the show particularly interesting. It takes us to a time before the Mahabharata, allowing audiences to look at these characters from a different perspective. For me, it also provides an opportunity to portray Jarasandha in a way that viewers may not have seen before and explore his journey in greater depth.
Q. Jarasandha is widely known for his strength and power. What other facets of his personality will audiences get to see?
Aabhas Mehta: Jarasandha is certainly known for his strength and power, but another aspect I find extremely interesting is his intelligence. He is not just a physically powerful king; he is someone who understands situations and thinks carefully before taking decisions. I believe audiences will see that Jarasandha is a character who possesses both strength and intelligence, and that makes him even more fascinating.
Q. Mythological characters are often remembered for one defining quality. What do you think will make your portrayal of Jarasandha special?
Aabhas Mehta: I want to portray Jarasandha differently from conventional mythological characters, particularly antagonists. Hastinapur Ke Veer brings out the human side of its characters and explores the reasons behind their decisions. Every individual has different emotions and motivations, and I want audiences to see that human aspect through my portrayal of Jarasandha.
Q. How does Jarasandha’s look help you get into character?
Aabhas Mehta: The look helps me tremendously. The moment I put on the costume, jewellery and makeup, I feel that I have transformed into Jarasandha. It is a very important part of getting into character. His look is distinctive and striking. His hairstyle, costume, makeup and props reflect his strong personality and help me change my body language, expressions and even the way I approach a scene.
Q. You may not share the screen with the younger artistes, but what has your off-screen bond with them been like?
Aabhas Mehta: Although I don’t work with the younger artistes on screen, I have had a very good interaction with them off-screen. They are all extremely energetic and it is fun being around them. It is wonderful to see how excited they are, how eager they are to learn and how much effort they put into giving their best while performing.
Q. What can today’s audiences learn from Jarasandha’s journey?
Aabhas Mehta: I think Jarasandha’s journey teaches us that power must be used very carefully. No matter how powerful a person is, if that power is not used properly, it can eventually lead to a major downfall. Hastinapur Ke Veer shows how important it is to nurture people with the right values and guidance. Power without the right direction can become destructive, no matter how great that power may be. Having power is one thing, but using it responsibly is equally important.
