Uttar Pradesh Sets New Benchmark in Clean Energy, Receives ‘Wind Procurement Champion’ Award

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone in the field of clean and renewable energy by receiving the prestigious “Wind Procurement Champion” award from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. The recognition was conferred during the national-level Global Wind Day 2026 celebrations held in Goa on June 15 for the state’s outstanding efforts in procuring and promoting wind energy.

Congratulating the officials and employees of the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited and the Energy Department, Uttar Pradesh Energy and Urban Development Minister A.K. Sharma described the achievement as a result of the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, coupled with the state’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible energy development.

Leading the Way in Renewable Energy Procurement

Speaking on the occasion, Sharma said Uttar Pradesh is steadily moving toward meeting its growing energy demands through cleaner and greener sources of power.

He noted that wind energy offers a unique advantage as it remains available in significant quantities during evening and night hours, particularly in summer months when electricity demand is at its peak. Recognizing this potential, the state government has adopted a diversified renewable energy strategy to strengthen long-term energy security.

Despite having limited natural potential for wind power generation within the state, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a national leader by securing large-scale green energy through long-term procurement agreements with wind-rich states. According to Sharma, this approach has established Uttar Pradesh as a model for renewable energy adoption in regions with limited wind resources.

Over 5,800 MW of Wind Energy Secured

The Energy Minister revealed that through arrangements facilitated by the Solar Energy Corporation of India and Power Trading Corporation of India, Uttar Pradesh has so far secured approximately 5,805 MW of wind energy capacity through long-term contracts.

Of this capacity, nearly 1,630 MW has already become operational and is supplying green energy to the state. He further informed that UPPCL is working on a plan to procure an additional 5,000 MW of wind power to meet Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) targets set for 2030.

The move is expected to significantly strengthen the state’s renewable energy portfolio while helping it meet future environmental and sustainability commitments.

Supporting Energy Security and Climate Goals

Sharma emphasized that the award represents more than just recognition of a procurement achievement. He described it as national acknowledgment of Uttar Pradesh’s efforts to enhance energy security, reduce carbon emissions, protect the environment, and contribute to India’s broader clean energy transition.

“This honour reflects Uttar Pradesh’s proactive role in advancing the vision of green and sustainable development championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The state is committed to expanding renewable energy adoption and ensuring reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly power for its citizens,” he said.

Award Presented at National Event

The award was received on behalf of Uttar Pradesh by Deepak Raizada from Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi during the Global Wind Day 2026 event in Goa.

The ceremony was attended by Union Minister of State Shripad Yesso Naik, senior officials from various states, industry representatives, and stakeholders from India’s renewable energy sector.

With ambitious renewable energy targets and a growing portfolio of green power projects, Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself as a key contributor to India’s energy transition. Officials expressed confidence that the state will continue setting new benchmarks in renewable energy adoption and remain at the forefront of the country’s clean energy movement in the years ahead.
