Indian Navy Chief Visits Myanmar to Strengthen Maritime Cooperation

New Delhi:| The Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, completed a four-day official visit to Myanmar from May 2 to May 5, 2026, aimed at strengthening bilateral defence and maritime cooperation between the two countries.

During the visit, the Navy Chief held high-level discussions with senior leadership of the Myanmar Armed Forces, including General Ye Win Oo, Defence Minister U Htun Aung, and Admiral Htein Win.

Focus on Maritime Security and Cooperation

The discussions reviewed ongoing bilateral naval cooperation and explored new avenues for collaboration in areas such as maritime security, capacity building, capability enhancement, and training exchanges.

The visit also included engagements at key Myanmar naval establishments, including the Central Naval Command, Naval Training Command, and No. 1 Fleet. Admiral Tripathi also laid a wreath at the Myanmar Armed Forces Fallen Heroes’ War Memorial, paying tribute to personnel who had lost their lives in service.

Longstanding Naval Partnership

India and Myanmar continued their regular naval interactions through established mechanisms such as Defence Cooperation Meetings, Staff Talks, and joint training exchanges. Operational cooperation included exercises like the India–Myanmar Naval Exercise (IMNEX) and the Indo-Myanmar Coordinated Patrol (IMCOR), along with port visits and hydrographic survey collaborations.

Both navies also participated in multilateral initiatives such as the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, MILAN, the Goa Maritime Conclave, and IOS SAGAR, reflecting deepening maritime engagement in the region.

Strengthening Regional Stability

Myanmar’s participation in Indian Navy-led international events, including fleet reviews and maritime symposia, highlighted growing defence coordination in the region.

The visit by the Indian Navy Chief reaffirmed the long-standing friendship between India and Myanmar, grounded in mutual trust, shared maritime interests, and a collective commitment to maintaining stability and security in the Indian Ocean Region.
