New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the critical importance of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in safeguarding India’s maritime security became clearly evident during Operation Sindoor. Addressing the gathering on the occasion of the 50th Raising Day of the Indian Coast Guard, the Defence Minister said the operation showcased excellent coordination among the three armed forces and demonstrated the effectiveness of India’s multi-layered maritime security architecture. He described the ICG as a strong frontline force guarding the nation’s maritime boundaries.
Rajnath Singh noted that Operation Sindoor was executed at a time of heightened sensitivity in the maritime domain. Despite the challenging environment, the Indian Coast Guard responded swiftly and decisively. Strategic assets were pre-deployed along the western coast, surveillance was intensified, and a high alert was maintained across coastal and gulf regions. “The Indian Coast Guard stands like a wall of trust along India’s maritime frontiers,” he said.

Indian Coast Guard: A Pillar of National Security
Calling the Indian Coast Guard one of the strongest pillars of national security, the Defence Minister said the force plays a vital role in preventing terrorism, arms smuggling, human trafficking and other illegal activities at sea. In an era marked by increasing global instability and evolving maritime threats, he said the responsibilities of the Coast Guard have expanded significantly.
He highlighted the ICG’s decisive role in tackling challenges such as drug trafficking, maritime piracy, illegal trade and marine pollution. Since its inception, the Indian Coast Guard has saved more than 11,800 lives at sea, reflecting its courage, professionalism and unwavering commitment to duty.
First Responder in Disasters
Rajnath Singh also praised the Coast Guard’s role as a first responder during disasters. Whether dealing with cyclones, maritime accidents or humanitarian assistance missions such as Operation Sagar Bandhu, the ICG has consistently demonstrated rapid response, sensitivity and professionalism. He said the Coast Guard’s disaster management capabilities and strong multi-agency coordination further strengthen the country’s overall security framework.
A Modern and Powerful Force
The Defence Minister said the Indian Coast Guard has evolved into a large, modern and powerful force equipped with advanced ships, helicopters, aircraft and cutting-edge technologies. He noted that the strength of the ICG enables India to articulate its maritime interests with confidence and pursue a clear strategy for the blue economy, maritime security and coastal development.
“The entire nation takes pride in the Indian Coast Guard,” he said.

Vision for the Next 25 Years
Rajnath Singh urged the Indian Coast Guard to prepare a clear, goal-oriented and forward-looking roadmap for the next 25 years. He said the roadmap should go beyond manpower planning and capability development and define where the organisation envisions itself in 2047, when India completes 100 years of independence. He also emphasised the need for organisational and structural reforms to make the ICG more agile, responsive and future-ready.
Full Support from the Defence Ministry
Reiterating that national security remains the government’s highest priority, the Defence Minister assured full support from the Ministry of Defence to the Indian Coast Guard. Strengthening technological capabilities, enhancing operational readiness and preparing for future challenges, he said, will remain key government priorities.
“When the Indian Coast Guard is strong, India’s maritime security is strong,” he asserted, adding that secure maritime borders would enable India to play a more confident role both regionally and globally.
Golden Jubilee Celebrations
On the occasion, Rajnath Singh released the Golden Jubilee logo of the Indian Coast Guard, symbolising 50 years of vigilance, maritime security and humanitarian service. He also released a commemorative postal stamp marking the Coast Guard’s five-decade journey. A special film showcasing the ICG’s growth, operational excellence and dedication to national security was screened.
The ceremony also included a tribute to fallen personnel at the National War Memorial, where a minute of silence was observed in honour of the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in service of the nation.
