Salima Tete Named Captain of India for Women’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025

New Delhi — Midfielder Salima Tete has been appointed captain of India’s 20-member squad for the upcoming Women’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025, to be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 5–14. Under the guidance of chief coach Harendra Singh, India will aim to win the title and secure direct qualification for the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026.

In a surprising move, veteran goalkeeper Savita, who has played over 300 international matches, was not included in the squad—likely ending her World Cup aspirations.

India, which finished last in the FIH Pro League and was relegated to the Nations Cup, faces a formidable challenge in the Asia Cup. Historically, South Korea and Japan have dominated the tournament, each winning three titles, while India has won twice—in 2004 and 2017. The team also finished runner-up twice and claimed bronze three times.

India’s campaign begins on September 5 against Thailand, followed by matches against China (Sept 6) and Singapore (Sept 8) in Pool B, which also features Japan. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the Super 4, with the finalists playing on September 14.

The Indian squad features a mix of youth and experience, with strength in midfield through Tete, Neha, Sharmila Devi, and Lalremsiami, while the forward line includes Navneet Kaur, Sangita Kumari, Mumtaz Khan, Rituja Pisal, and Deepika. Goalkeeping duties will be handled by Bansuri Solanki and Bichhu Devi Kharibam.

Coach Harendra Singh expressed confidence, stating: “We have picked a balanced side with a blend of experienced and young talent. The Asia Cup is not only about continental supremacy but also about qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Every match will test our discipline, fitness, and strategy, and the players are eager to prove themselves on the big stage.”
