India and Japan to Reaffirm Commitment to Indo-Pacific Peace

New Delhi — During his upcoming visit to Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, will reaffirm their shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced today.

At the invitation of Prime Minister Ishiba, PM Modi will embark on an official visit to Japan from August 29 to 30 to participate in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. This visit marks a significant milestone as it will be PM Modi’s first annual summit with Prime Minister Ishiba.

A Strong and Expanding Partnership

The annual summit serves as the highest-level dialogue between the two nations, guiding the agenda for the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this will be PM Modi’s seventh trip to Japan and his first standalone meeting with Ishiba. The two leaders have previously met at the ASEAN and G7 Summits.

India and Japan, both prominent democracies and among the world’s top five economies, share common values, trust, and a strategic outlook on numerous issues. Over the past decade, their bilateral relations have expanded significantly, encompassing a wide range of areas including trade, investment, defense, security, technology, and people-to-people exchanges.

Summit Agenda and Future Cooperation

Foreign Secretary Misri stated that the 15th summit will provide an opportunity to conduct an in-depth review of the bilateral relationship and to assess the progress made in various sectors over recent years. The leaders will also exchange views on important regional and international challenges.

A key focus of the visit will be to strengthen engagement between Indian states and Japanese prefectures, which has intensified in recent years. The visit is expected to not only consolidate the long-standing friendship between the two nations but also to open new avenues for collaboration.

Following his visit to Japan, Prime Minister Modi will travel to China from August 31 to September 1 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.
