UP Government Reserves 20% of Police and Fire Services Jobs for Ex-Agniveers

Lucknow: In a significant move towards integrating former Agniveers into mainstream employment, the Uttar Pradesh government has proposed a 20% horizontal reservation for ex-Agniveers in direct recruitment for various posts in the state police and fire services. These include Constables in Civil Police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Mounted Police, and Firemen.

The decision is in line with the central government’s Agnipath Scheme, launched to provide a short-term opportunity for patriotic and motivated youth to serve in the Indian Armed Forces — the Army, Navy, and Air Force. As per the scheme, the first batch of Agniveers is expected to complete their four-year tenure in 2026. Of these, 25% may continue in permanent roles within the armed forces, while the remaining 75% will rejoin civilian life with enhanced skills and discipline.

To facilitate the reintegration of these individuals, the Uttar Pradesh government is offering them horizontal reservation of 20% in the upcoming recruitments to the police and fire services. In addition, a relaxation of 3 years in the upper age limit will be granted to ex-Agniveers, akin to concessions extended to ex-servicemen. The service period as an Agniveer will also be deducted while calculating the maximum age.

This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to recognizing the service of Agniveers and enabling their transition into civilian careers with dignity and opportunity.
