UP receives historic boost in energy sector, moves towards self-reliance in power generation

  • PM Modi gifts UP thermal power projects worth over Rs 44,000 crore from Kanpur
  • Guided by double-engine govt, UP emerges as leader in energy sector, projects to raise power capacity by 24.89%
  • Supercritical technology to drive environmental balance, job creation, and direct benefits for farmers and industries
  • Energy expansion to light every home, power every field, and create opportunities for every youth in coming years

Kanpur/Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh marked a historic milestone in its journey towards energy self-reliance on Friday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated thermal power projects worth over Rs 44,000 crore in Kanpur. The development marks a historic milestone in the state’s energy sector, setting the foundation for unprecedented growth in electricity production and distribution.

These newly launched projects are expected to add an impressive 3,081 megawatts of additional electricity generation capacity, representing a 24.89% boost in the state’s total power output. This expansion will significantly strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s ability to meet its rising energy demands, particularly in the industrial, agricultural, and domestic sectors.

Notably, Uttar Pradesh is transitioning from being a power consumer to establishing itself as a key power producer in the country. PM Modi’s initiative, coupled with the Yogi government’s sustainable energy policy, has propelled Uttar Pradesh to new heights of development. In the years ahead, this expansion in power capacity will serve as the foundation for providing electricity to every home, electrifying every farm, and empowering every youth with new opportunities.

With the launch of these thermal power projects, Uttar Pradesh is set to gain many benefits. The most important is the move towards becoming self-reliant in electricity production. In 2017, the state’s total power generation capacity was 15,916 megawatts. Under the Yogi government, this has increased to 24,868 megawatts, and by the end of this year, it is expected to reach 27,184 megawatts.

All new projects use supercritical technology, which generates more electricity using less coal. This has significantly reduced carbon emissions and supported environmental protection.

These projects will also boost the state’s revenue. Of the electricity produced by the new projects, 75.11% will be used in Uttar Pradesh and 24.89% will be supplied to Assam. This will not only earn the state income but also help balance energy distribution. Every section of society will benefit. Stronger power supply will directly help farmers, households, and industries. Irrigation will become cheaper, factory production will increase, and homes will receive uninterrupted power.

It is noteworthy that thousands of youths have got jobs through the construction and operation of these projects. At the same time, basic infrastructure like roads, water supply, healthcare, and education is being developed in the project areas. Looking ahead, the Yogi government has prepared a large-scale plan to produce 10,795 megawatts of thermal energy and 28,000 megawatts of renewable energy in the next 10 years. This will not only make Uttar Pradesh self-reliant in the energy sector but also turn it into a major pillar of the country’s power supply.

Yogi govt’s milestones in the Energy Sector

* Over 1.78 crore electricity connections have been provided across the state
* Electrification of 1,21,324 majras
* Work has begun on 13 major thermal power plants (18,040 megawatts)
* Power plants with a capacity of 9,000 megawatts are already operational.

Unprecedented expansion in power generation

Several high-value thermal power projects are driving Uttar Pradesh toward energy self-reliance:
* Jawaharpur Thermal Project (2×660 MW) – Rs 14,628 crore
* Ghatampur Thermal Power Project (1×660 MW) – Over Rs 9,300 crore
* Panki Thermal Expansion Project (1×660 MW) – Over Rs 8,300 crore
* Obra-C Thermal Project (2×660 MW) – Rs 6,502 crore
* Khurja Thermal Project (2×660 MW) – Rs 5,544 crore

Metro expansion will connect business and transport activities with major destinations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday gifted Kanpur residents a significant boost to urban connectivity with the launch of a major metro expansion project. The extension, worth over Rs 2,100 crore, will connect Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central Railway Station via a new 7-kilometre corridor. The project will ease movement across major markets, offices, and high-traffic areas. The new section includes five underground metro stations—Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central.

This expanded route will provide direct metro access to prominent locations such as Lal Imli, Z Square Mall, Green Park Stadium, Parade Ground, Book Market, and Somdutt Plaza. It is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, offering thousands of daily commuters a safer, more comfortable, and time-saving alternative to road travel. The metro expansion will also help reduce dependence on private vehicles, resulting in lower carbon emissions and improved air quality. With its fast and regular service, the metro will allow citizens to travel longer distances in less time, saving both fuel and costs.
