Lucknow— In a significant move to combat plastic pollution, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched an ambitious campaign ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, under the theme ‘Ending Plastic Globally’. Responding to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s call for environmental protection, school children across the state will lead the charge by participating in a range of awareness activities and competitions designed to highlight the dangers of plastic and promote sustainable practices.
To spread awareness among the masses, students will participate in nukkad nataks (street plays), speech contests, and painting competitions, with the goal of sensitizing people to the impact of plastic waste on rivers, land, and overall ecosystem health. These events aim to ignite a sense of responsibility among youth and encourage behavioral change within communities.
According to UP Environment Director Sushant Sharma, preparations for the state-wide initiative have already begun. A formal directive has been issued to all District Magistrates to organize events locally. The flagship event will be held at the Regional Science Centre in Aliganj, Lucknow, coordinated by the state’s Department of Environment.
Focus on Reducing Plastic Usage
This year’s Environment Day will specifically emphasize ending plastic pollution by advocating for a drastic reduction in plastic use and discouraging the consumption of single-use plastic items. Shruti Shukla, Deputy Director of the department, confirmed that experts working in the field and representatives of voluntary organizations will also be part of these events.
“The campaign will not only inform but also inspire action, especially among school children, who will be the face of this movement,” Shukla said.
In the speech competitions, children will talk about how to minimize the use of plastic in daily life. Meanwhile, painting contests will allow young participants to express their ideas and emotions related to environmental conservation through art.
Building a Green Future
The campaign is not just about awareness but also about action. Students will be encouraged to plant trees and take a pledge to care for and protect them. The Environment Directorate aims to create long-term commitment by instilling environmental values at an early age.
As the globe struggles with the growing threat of plastic pollution, Uttar Pradesh’s proactive steps—particularly engaging students in this vital cause—set a positive precedent for grassroots-driven change.
This year’s theme, ‘Ending Plastic Globally’, underscores a pressing need to rethink our dependence on plastic. With its youth leading the way, Uttar Pradesh is showing that environmental stewardship begins in classrooms, spreads to homes, and eventually transforms communities.
