Lucknow – Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh government’s National Family Benefit Scheme has emerged as a vital support system for families that have lost their sole breadwinner. Through this welfare initiative, economically disadvantaged families across the state are being provided with financial assistance of ₹30,000. Over the past eight years, the Yogi government has spent more than ₹2,310 crore to benefit approximately 8 lakh poor families under this scheme.
For the past eight years, the Yogi administration has been working in close coordination with the Central Government to implement public welfare schemes that ensure the well-being of all sections of society. The National Family Benefit Scheme has become a cornerstone for stability in the lives of families from both urban and rural areas who are grappling with the sudden loss of their household head.
Prompt Action on Applications
To ensure that helpless families face no hardships, the Yogi government has taken proactive steps to integrate them into welfare schemes like the National Family Benefit Scheme without delay. Applications under the scheme are handled swiftly by the Department of Social Welfare, which promptly verifies eligibility and processes assistance.
The eligibility criteria include:
- The applicant must be a resident of Uttar Pradesh.
- The deceased family head must have been between 18 and 60 years of age at the time of death.
- The annual family income must not exceed ₹46,080 in rural areas and ₹56,460 in urban areas.
- Applications must be filed within one year of the death.
Once verified, the Social Welfare Department decides on the application within 30 days, and the approved amount of ₹30,000 is directly transferred to the beneficiary’s bank account through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS).
Digitalization for Efficiency
To streamline the process, the application, approval, and fund disbursement have been fully digitalized since August 1, 2023, ensuring transparency and quicker delivery of benefits. According to data from the Social Welfare Department, between 2017 and 2025, the Yogi government has disbursed ₹2,310.837 crore to 770,279 bereaved families.
Alleviating Economic Insecurity for the Poor
The primary objective of this initiative is to ensure that no poor family plunges into deeper financial crisis due to the death of its breadwinner. Recognizing that daily sustenance becomes a challenge in such scenarios, the scheme provides immediate support to help families regain financial footing.
The Yogi government’s commitment to uplifting the poor and marginalized is evident through this sustained effort. Thousands of families have been empowered, and their economic burdens eased, due to the proactive and compassionate governance model adopted by the state. Special instructions have been issued to local administrations to ensure that no eligible family is left out of such welfare benefits.
The National Family Benefit Scheme reflects the government’s broader aim of inclusive development and social security, especially for the most vulnerable sections of society.
