Vinesh Phogat to Set Up World-Class Sports Academy for Aspiring Athletes

New Delhi: Former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has announced her plan to establish a world-class sports academy aimed at nurturing future athletic talent. The initiative will be funded by the ₹4 crore reward she received from the Haryana government under its premier sports policy.

As part of Haryana’s incentive scheme for medal-winning athletes, Phogat was awarded a sum typically granted to Olympic silver medallists—despite being disqualified at the Paris Olympics due to a minor weight discrepancy. The scheme offers medalists a choice between a government job, land, or a financial grant, with ₹6 crore for gold, ₹4 crore for silver, and ₹2.5 crore for bronze.

Taking to social media, Vinesh shared her motivation behind this decision:

“True victory lies in recognition. Over the years, I have been fortunate to receive immense love, trust, and encouragement. Now it’s time to give back. This academy will not just be a facility—it will be a safe, empowering space where the next generation of athletes can thrive.”

She emphasized that the academy would focus on providing young athletes with modern infrastructure, professional coaching, and a supportive environment—something she believes every budding sportsperson deserves.

“This isn’t just my dream—it belongs to all those who dare to dream big through sport. With your support, we can make it real,” her post read.

Phogat also remarked that this opportunity is more than a reward—it is a means to fulfill a long-cherished aspiration to uplift sports culture and empower youth through better resources.

The announcement follows her recent retirement from wrestling after being disqualified at the Olympics for a slight weight mismatch in the 50kg category. She was slated to face American wrestler Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the final.

Having now stepped into public service, Vinesh serves as an MLA from Julana, representing the Congress party. Her journey from champion wrestler to changemaker in politics and sports infrastructure reflects her evolving commitment to national development.
