State Cabinet Approves Permanent Rehabilitation of 99 Displaced Hindu Bengali Families

Lucknow: In a significant humanitarian decision, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the permanent rehabilitation of 99 Hindu Bengali families displaced from erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, marking an important step toward ensuring a safe, dignified, and stable future for these long-displaced families.

These families have been residing for several years on lake land in village Nangla Gosai of Mawana tehsil in Meerut district, an area classified as environmentally sensitive. Keeping environmental conservation in mind, the government has decided to relocate them to a suitable alternative site in Rasulabad tehsil of Kanpur Dehat district.

According to the approved plan, 50 families will be rehabilitated in village Bhainsaya on 11.1375 hectares (27.5097 acres) of land, while the remaining 49 families will be settled in village Tajpur Tarsauli on 10.530 hectares (26.009 acres). Both land parcels are already recorded in the name of the Rehabilitation Department, ensuring smooth implementation.

Each of the 99 families will be allotted 0.50 acre of land on a 30-year lease, which will be renewable in successive terms of 30 years, allowing a maximum lease duration of up to 90 years. The land will be provided on premium or lease rent basis, as per government norms.

Officials stated that this decision balances ecological protection with humanitarian responsibility, as it clears encroachment from lake land while offering displaced families a permanent and secure settlement. For families who have lived for decades in uncertainty, the move promises long-term stability, legal security, and a chance to rebuild their lives with dignity.

The Cabinet’s approval is being widely viewed as a compassionate and forward-looking step in addressing long-pending rehabilitation issues in the state.
