Prayagraj: The Maha Kumbh 2025, the world’s largest religious gathering, is expected to create an economic impact of over Rs 3 lakh crore (approximately $360 billion), according to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). The grand event, held in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, has attracted a record-breaking 60 crore devotees, significantly surpassing initial estimates of 40 crore attendees.
According to CAIT General Secretary and MP Praveen Khandelwal, the event highlights the strong interlinkage between religion and commerce, benefiting multiple sectors including tourism, retail, transport, and infrastructure. The Maha Kumbh’s economic influence extends well beyond Prayagraj, positively impacting Ayodhya, Varanasi, and other major religious cities within a 150-kilometer radius.
Economic Boom Across Sectors
- Tourism & Hospitality: With millions of domestic and international visitors, hotels, guest houses, and lodges have witnessed an unprecedented surge in bookings. The increased footfall has also fueled demand for local eateries and traditional crafts.
- Transport & Logistics: The influx of devotees has significantly boosted revenue for airlines, railways, and road transport operators. Additional train services and flights have been arranged to accommodate the growing number of travelers.
- Retail & Small Businesses: Street vendors, shopkeepers, and traders are witnessing record sales, with items such as religious souvenirs, garments, and food products in high demand. Temporary markets and fairs have further contributed to the economic upturn.
Government Investment & Infrastructure Development
The Uttar Pradesh government has made massive infrastructural investments, allocating Rs 7,500 crore for the development of roads, flyovers, and underpasses in Prayagraj. Out of this, Rs 1,500 crore was dedicated specifically to Maha Kumbh preparations, ensuring smoother transportation and better civic amenities.
This investment has significantly improved municipal facilities and traffic flow, not just in Prayagraj but also in adjoining regions. Enhanced sanitation, security, and healthcare facilities have been put in place to manage the immense crowd efficiently.
A Historic Religious and Economic Phenomenon
The Maha Kumbh is not only a spiritual event but also a key driver of economic activity, contributing to Uttar Pradesh’s GDP and employment generation. Experts believe that this year’s economic impact will surpass previous records, positioning it as one of India’s biggest financial events.
