Prayagraj: As Uttar Pradesh advances towards its goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy, the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj has emerged as a significant economic catalyst, contributing over Rs 3 lakh crore to the state’s GDP. The 45-day-long spiritual gathering, which concluded on Maha Shivratri, witnessed an unprecedented influx of devotees and economic activity.
On the final day of the grand event, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took to social media to announce that over 66.21 crore pilgrims participated in the holy bath at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.
A Major Economic Driver
Industry experts have hailed the Maha Kumbh as one of India’s largest economic events, generating approximately Rs 3 lakh crore (about $360 billion) in sales across various sectors.
Praveen Khandelwal, BJP MP and secretary general of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), had earlier estimated that 40 crore visitors would participate, leading to commercial transactions worth around Rs 2 lakh crore. However, with an overwhelming turnout of over 66 crore people, economic activity soared beyond expectations, surpassing Rs 3 lakh crore in revenue.
Air travel to Prayagraj also saw a significant surge, with airfares remaining steady even in the typically low-demand March quarter. The influx of pilgrims and tourists fueled demand across multiple sectors, including hospitality, transportation, religious merchandise, textiles, food and beverages, logistics, handicrafts, and consumer goods.
Infrastructure and Investment Surge
The Uttar Pradesh government made substantial investments to enhance Prayagraj’s infrastructure ahead of the Maha Kumbh. A budget of Rs 7,500 crore was allocated for infrastructural upgrades, including the construction of 14 new flyovers, six underpasses, more than 200 widened roads, new corridors, expanded railway stations, and a modernized airport terminal.
Additionally, Rs 1,500 crore was earmarked specifically for Kumbh Mela preparations, ensuring seamless event management, security, and facilities for millions of pilgrims.
Regional Economic Impact
The economic benefits of the Maha Kumbh extended beyond Prayagraj, positively impacting cities and towns within a 100–150 km radius. Increased commercial activities, tourism, and local business growth provided a significant boost to the regional economy, reinforcing the event’s role as a key driver of economic expansion in Uttar Pradesh.
With Maha Kumbh 2025 setting new records in both attendance and economic contribution, it has further strengthened Uttar Pradesh’s position as a hub of religious tourism and economic opportunity.
