CM YogiLaunches ₹941 Crore Projects; Envisions KGMU as a Global Center for Medical Research and Technology

Lucknow – Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath  described King George’s Medical University (KGMU) as not just a medical institution, but a symbol of India’s enduring healthcare tradition and a beacon of national service. Speaking at a landmark event commemorating KGMU’s 120th anniversary, the CM inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for seven new projects worth ₹941 crore.

“KGMU is the embodiment of an era’s medical legacy. Its 120-year journey is nothing short of extraordinary—it has withstood two global pandemics and emerged stronger,” said CM Yogi during the ceremony held in the KGMU premises. He personally visited wards to check on patients and held detailed discussions with doctors about the institution’s future health infrastructure.

Leading the Fight Against Pandemics

The CM highlighted KGMU’s pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic, calling it the first medical institute in Uttar Pradesh to initiate testing facilities. “The first 100 suspected COVID samples were tested here. It was this courageous and timely intervention that enabled the state to build an effective strategy against the pandemic,” he added.

Inauguration of Major Projects

Among the major developments launched were the Orthopedic Super Specialty Block, a New Cardiology Wing, a 500-bed Trauma Center, a new General Surgery Department building, an expanded Administrative Complex, and a Patient Utility Complex. CM Yogi termed these developments as “a significant leap toward building a world-class healthcare system under the double-engine government.”

“Projects worth nearly ₹1,000 crore being launched simultaneously at a single medical institution shows our seriousness toward health reforms,” he said.

Medical Revolution in Uttar Pradesh

Reflecting on India’s progress, CM Yogi noted, “The past 11 years have seen historical development across all sectors—including healthcare.” He mentioned that the number of AIIMS institutes in India has grown from a few to 23, and that Uttar Pradesh’s vision of one medical college per district is becoming a reality.

In 2024 alone, 17 new medical colleges began MBBS courses, 13 of which are government-run. He emphasized how healthcare in eastern UP, once plagued by diseases like dengue and encephalitis, has now improved with dialysis and platelet facilities available in every district.

CM Yogi: KGMU’s Satellite Center and Future Vision

The CM also announced the establishment of a KGMU satellite center in Balrampur, a move aimed at decentralizing advanced healthcare services from Lucknow to smaller cities. This would reduce patient burden on capital-based institutions and make specialized care accessible locally.

He further shared plans for a Center of Excellence in Medical Technology in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, involving both KGMU and SGPGI. “This center will support cutting-edge research and help India become self-reliant in health technology,” he noted.

Expressing satisfaction during patient interactions, CM Yogi said, “It’s rare to witness the kind of confidence patients have here—their trust is this institution’s greatest asset.” He urged medical professionals and administrators to stay updated and resist negativity. “Whether it’s an individual or an institution—those who don’t keep pace with time are forgotten. But those who lead become legends,” he said.

Ceremonial Start to New Era

CM Yogi formally launched all seven projects with traditional rituals, including prayers and Vedic chants. He visited the newly inaugurated wings and reviewed patient care facilities, speaking personally with doctors and patients to understand their experiences and needs.
