Jugraj Singh: From Attari-Wagah Border to Hockey Stardom

Chandigarh: Jugraj Singh’s journey from selling Indian flags and water bottles at the Attari-Wagah border to becoming the top scorer in the Men’s Hockey India League (HIL) is a story of resilience and determination. Born in Attari, Punjab, Jugraj faced early hardships when his father, an Army porter, fell ill. Taking on family responsibilities, he worked tirelessly while nurturing his passion for hockey, inspired by his older brother.

At 28, Jugraj’s breakthrough came with the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers, where his 12 goals, including a hat-trick in the HIL final against Hyderabad Toofans, played a pivotal role in securing victory. “Hard work paved the way for my future,” he reflected.

Jugraj credits his success to meticulous preparation, learning from every match, and the support of his mentor, Rupinder Pal Singh. Now eyeing the FIH Pro League, he aims to help India clinch gold at the Olympics, Asian Games, and World Cup, embodying the spirit of perseverance.
