chennai super kings vs rajasthan royals standings: ‘Rajasthan Royals Outplayed Us’: CSK Batting Coach Michael Hussey
Guwahati: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey acknowledged that his side was outperformed by Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season opener on Monday in Guwahati. Hussey highlighted the challenges posed by the pitch, which had been kept under covers, offering early movement that made batting difficult for the five-time champions.
“Rajasthan Royals outplayed us today. The pitch had been under cover for a long time, so there was some early movement. Our batters struggled to adjust initially, but I expect much better performances in the coming games, especially if the pitches are flatter,” Hussey said after the match.

Hussey stressed the importance of adaptability when conditions are not ideal. He suggested that CSK batters may need to adjust their approach, finding alternative scoring areas rather than sticking to a fixed strategy.
“We need to take the lessons from this game. If conditions aren’t perfect, perhaps we need to adjust our sights and look for runs in different areas. We’ll take these learnings and move forward quickly,” he added.

RR’s Dominant Performance
Rajasthan Royals’ victory was powered by fiery bowling from Jofra Archer (2/19), Ravindra Jadeja (2/18), and Nandre Burger (2/26), which reduced CSK to 57/6 at one stage. Despite valiant efforts from Jamie Overton (43 off 36 balls), Kartik Sharma (18), and Sarfaraz Khan (17), CSK could only post 127 in 19.4 overs.
In response, RR’s openers Vaibhav Suryavanshi (52 off 17 balls) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (38* off 36 balls) shared a rapid 75-run partnership, powered by multiple boundaries and sixes, sealing an eight-wicket win with ease.
Hussey remains optimistic that CSK’s batting unit will bounce back in the upcoming matches, learning from the experience and improving their performance in the tournament.
