The 36-year-old had been in talks to join Argentina’s Rosario Central, but after facing criticism and threats, he decided to alter his mind.
The 36-year-old told the Benfica website, “I am happy to stay at Benfica for one more year” in order to “continue to win titles.”
In addition to becoming a star for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain, Di Maria assisted Argentina in winning the World Cup and the Copa America.
After joining Benfica in 2023, he assisted the team in finishing second in the Portuguese league.
In July, Di Maria said, “My dream has always been to go back and play for Central and retire in their jersey.”
However, the athlete expressed his dismay at the threats that he and his family received once the details of their talks with Rosario Central were made public.
