Anandiben Patel Calls for NAAC Evaluation and Holistic Development of Universities

(Lucknow): During the golden jubilee celebrations of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, who also serves as the Chancellor of state universities, emphasised the importance of quality education and the need for institutional evaluations. Speaking to the gathered audience, she strongly urged all universities and colleges across the state to undergo NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) evaluations to ensure the maintenance of academic excellence.

Governor Patel noted that while quality education was often discussed, there was a lack of serious effort toward official evaluations. She pointed out that out of 34 universities in Uttar Pradesh, only 13 have received an A++ grade from NAAC, mentioning the achievement of Narendra Dev Agricultural University, which became the first agricultural university in India to secure an A++ grade after evaluation.

Encouraging higher education institutions to aspire for global recognition, Governor Patel suggested that universities participate in global rankings and adopt more structured management practices. She recommended creating a “cabinet of Deans,” similar to the Chief Minister’s cabinet, where deans could meet regularly to address university goals and challenges. Drawing inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approach as Gujarat CM, she highlighted the importance of collective leadership to tackle departmental hurdles.

The Governor also urged universities to prepare a 10-year vision document for their growth and development. She underscored Ayodhya’s rich heritage, emphasising spirituality, knowledge, and morality. She encouraged the academic community to engage in discussions about Lord Ram’s life and values, such as his acceptance of humble offerings from Shabri, as a way to foster moral and ethical learning.

Further, Governor Patel pushed for universities to become self-reliant, citing Jhansi University as an example of research and product development, specifically in Shrianna (millets), to combat malnutrition. She also recommended that hostel-residing female students take turns cooking meals every 15 days to learn essential life skills.

Addressing the importance of a balanced student life, Governor Patel highlighted the need for greater involvement in sports and physical activities. She raised concerns about modern parenting trends that restrict outdoor play, which she believes is essential for a child’s mental and physical well-being.

Patel also called for universities to honour the legacy of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, as her 300th birth anniversary is being celebrated this year. The Governor officially inaugurated the newly constructed Sardar Patel Bhawan and visited a campus exhibition during the event. Additionally, winners of competitions organised in council schools were felicitated.

Rajni Tiwari, Minister of State for Higher Education and the chief guest at the event, spoke about the inclusion of Indian knowledge systems, cultural heritage, and values in the New Education Policy (NEP). She emphasised the importance of staying connected to one’s roots alongside modern education. She also celebrated the realisation of Lord Ram’s grand temple at his birthplace, stating that Uttar Pradesh is advancing towards embodying Ramrajya ideals.

The event was also attended by Prof. Pratibha Goyal, Vice Chancellor of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, who shared the university’s 50-year journey, and several dignitaries, including Champat Rai and Gaurav Dayal, among others.
