Washington: US President Joe Biden spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu . They discussed new US military deployments to counter Iranian threats of a direct attack against Israel during the talks.
“President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Israel’s security from threats posed by Iran and its supported terrorist groups Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis,” the White House said in a statement after the talks.
Along with the commitment to Israel’s security, Biden also stressed the importance of ongoing efforts to reduce broader tensions in the region. US Vice President Kamala Harris also attended the talks.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military has prepared for any Iranian attack against the country after the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday.
Sources in the Israeli Defence Minister’s office told news agency IANS that following Supreme Iranian Leader Ali Khamenei’s remarks that a retaliatory strike would be launched against Israel to avenge Haniyeh’s killing, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have prepared themselves for any eventuality.
