Rajnath Singh calls for boosting Indo Maldives ties

Lucknow: The meeting between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Maldivian counterpart reaffirmed India’s commitment to fostering a robust bilateral relationship with the Maldives. At the delegation-level discussions, Singh underscored the importance of the two nations’ partnership, describing it as “close, cordial, and multidimensional,” rooted in shared spiritual, historical, linguistic, and ethnic ties.

Highlights of the Meeting

  1. Acknowledgment of Presidential Visit:
    • Singh recalled the recent state visit by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu in October 2024.
    • He referenced the publication of the Joint Vision Document during the visit, describing it as a guide for the evolving bilateral relationship.
  2. Strategic Importance under Neighbourhood First Policy:
    • Singh emphasized the Maldives’ unique position within India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, aimed at ensuring regional stability and prosperity.
    • Both nations were recognized as key players in maintaining security in the Indian Ocean region, contributing to India’s SAGAR (Security And Growth For All in the Region) initiative.
  3. Strengthening Defense Cooperation:
    • Singh detailed India’s ongoing efforts to bolster Maldivian defense capabilities through workshops, joint exercises, training programs, and equipment provisions.
    • He reiterated India’s unwavering support for the Maldives National Defence Force, ensuring continued assistance in capacity-building efforts.
  4. Historical and Economic Linkages:
    • India was among the first to recognize the Maldives’ independence in 1965, with ties deepened by cultural, religious, and economic bonds.
    • The Maldives’ strategic location, close to India’s west coast and key maritime trade routes, further underscores its importance.
  5. Economic Cooperation:
    • The meeting also acknowledged the Maldives’ economic reliance on tourism, a sector contributing over 25% of its GDP and supporting 70% of jobs, directly and indirectly.
    • Singh highlighted India’s commitment to supporting Maldivian development and welfare, strengthening economic and geopolitical ties.

This dialogue reinforces the shared goals of India and the Maldives in promoting regional security and prosperity while deepening their historic and strategic partnership.
