When Chai Met Toast and Job Kurian’s “Dreamland” Is a Heartfelt Ode to Home

Mumbai: Indie-folk sensation When Chai Met Toast has teamed up with acclaimed Malayalam singer-songwriter Job Kurian to create their new single, “Dreamland.” The track is a touching and deeply personal tribute to the idea of home, capturing the essence of familiar places and cherished memories.

Crafted in a beautiful blend of Malayalam, Hindi, and English, the song draws on the band’s own childhood experiences in Kerala, which they affectionately call their “dreamland.” “Dreamland” evokes a sense of comfort and nostalgia by weaving together references to everyday life, cultural touchstones, and the simple sounds that define a place.

The collaboration came to life during WCMT’s songwriting sessions in the hills of Kerala. The song’s warm, contemporary folk sound is enriched by the inclusion of traditional instruments like the Kombu and Chenda, which add an authentic touch of Kerala’s folk music.

“Traveling the world made us realize there’s no place like home,” the band said about the release. They described “Dreamland” as a tribute to their friends, family, and the unique humor and chaos that define their hometown. Job Kurian added that he immediately connected with the lyrics because they resonated deeply with his own feelings for his homeland, calling the collaboration a truly special experience.

“Dreamland” is a part of the band’s upcoming album, Small Town, Big Love, Little Homes. The song is more than just a musical piece; it’s a universal reflection on identity and belonging, wrapped in the warmth and charm of Kerala.
