Uttar Pradesh’s Power Centre Set to Shift to Gomti Nagar; New Grand Vidhan Bhavan Planned on 245 Acres

Lucknow: The political power centre of Uttar Pradesh is set to shift from Hazratganj to Gomti Nagar, as the state government moves ahead with plans to construct a new and grand Vidhan Bhavan complex in the capital. The proposed site is located on land in Sahara City, Gomti Nagar, where preparations for the ambitious project have gathered pace following approval from the state government.

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has initiated the process of appointing a consultant to prepare the design and Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new legislative complex.

245-Acre Mega Campus Identified

The search for a suitable site for the new Vidhan Bhavan had been underway for several years and has now culminated in the selection of land at Sahara City. The LDA has secured 75 acres under its jurisdiction, while the Lucknow Municipal Corporation has reclaimed 170 acres after cancelling the lease on its portion of the land. In total, 245 acres are now available for the project.

According to LDA Vice Chairman Prathamesh Kumar, the land measurement report has already been sent to the state government. The next step involves engaging a consultant to finalise the architectural design and prepare the DPR.

Why a New Vidhan Bhavan?

The existing Vidhan Bhavan in Hazratganj faces several logistical challenges, which officials believe will be resolved with the development of the new complex.

Due to frequent VIP movements in the Hazratganj and Lalbagh areas, traffic is often halted, causing inconvenience to commuters, including schoolchildren and hospital visitors. Relocating the legislative complex to Gomti Nagar is expected to ease congestion in the city’s central business district.

Parking constraints at the current premises have also been a major issue. The proposed 245-acre campus will incorporate modern parking facilities and improved infrastructure to accommodate legislators, officials, and visitors more efficiently.

Additionally, shifting the seat of power will enable the Hazratganj area to be developed more freely as a dedicated tourist and heritage zone, which is currently restricted due to high-security requirements.

A New Administrative Hub

Urban planning experts suggest that Gomti Nagar is strategically well-suited in terms of connectivity and future expansion. The construction of the new Vidhan Bhavan is expected to trigger rapid infrastructure development in surrounding areas, potentially transforming the urban landscape of Lucknow.

With the proposed relocation, Gomti Nagar is poised to emerge as the new administrative and political hub of Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant shift in the capital’s governance geography.
