Uttar Pradesh Moves Closer to Energy Self-Reliance with Successful Synchronization of 660 MW Unit at Ghatampur Project

Lucknow: Under the dynamic leadership of Urban Development and Energy Minister A. K. Sharma, Uttar Pradesh has achieved a historic milestone in the energy sector. The 660 MW Unit-3 of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project was successfully synchronized with the 765 kV grid, marking a key step toward its commercial operation.

The Ghatampur project, operated by NUPPL, a joint venture of NLC India Limited (51%) and UP Power Corporation Limited (49%), will significantly boost the state’s electricity generation capacity. Once fully operational, Unit-3 alone is expected to produce around 47.52 million units of electricity daily, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to meet the growing demands of the state.

With the addition of Unit-3, Uttar Pradesh’s total installed capacity is set to rise to approximately 13,388 MW. Units 1 and 2 have been operational since December 2024 and December 2025, respectively, reflecting the project’s steady progress. About 93% of the generated electricity will cater to Uttar Pradesh, with the remainder supplied to neighboring states, strengthening regional energy balance.

To ensure long-term fuel security, the Pachwara South Coal Block in Jharkhand is being developed to guarantee uninterrupted and sustainable power generation. The project is also aligned with strict environmental standards, featuring Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, along with Zero Liquid Discharge technology to minimize ecological impact.

Minister A. K. Sharma highlighted that this achievement is a decisive step toward energy self-reliance for Uttar Pradesh. He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing reliable, uninterrupted, and high-quality electricity, while also boosting industrial growth, investment, and overall economic development in the state.

With this accomplishment, Uttar Pradesh is rapidly advancing toward a future of sustainable and self-sufficient energy generation, signaling a bright and empowered trajectory for the state.
