Uttar Pradesh Gives Eco-Tourism a New Boost: Major Development Push in Dudhwa and Katarniaghat

Lucknow: Eco-tourism in Uttar Pradesh is set for a major transformation with the Eco-Tourism Development Board approving a series of new initiatives aimed at developing Dudhwa National Park and Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary into world-class eco-tourism hubs. The proposals, discussed in a recent meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary, focus on enhancing wildlife experiences, promoting Tharu cultural heritage and expanding river safaris to attract both domestic and international tourists.

One of the key highlights is the introduction of the ‘Anubhav – Tharu Culture’ programme, which will offer visitors an immersive experience into the rich traditions of the Tharu tribe. The initiative also includes the promotion of the traditional Tharu Thali, prepared with indigenous grains, herbs and spices. Hotels and resorts in the region have been instructed to feature the Tharu Thali on their menus, while training programmes are being planned to empower Tharu youth and women in hospitality and culinary skills. This move is expected to strengthen cultural preservation as well as create new income opportunities for the community.

In Katarniaghat, the board has proposed the expansion of the Gerua River boat safari, where two additional boats will be introduced to meet the rising tourist demand. The enhanced river safari capacity will allow more visitors to explore the sanctuary’s biodiversity, while ensuring that all vessels operate using eco-friendly technology to protect the river ecosystem.

Meanwhile, a proposal has been tabled to revive the Chandan Chowki Shilpgram, a tribal craft village developed by the Tribal Development Department. Currently non-operational, the centre will be redeveloped as a vibrant cultural hub featuring handicraft exhibitions, workshops and traditional performances. The board has recommended that the centre be operated through private investment under the supervision of the tourism and eco-tourism departments.

Officials noted that these initiatives will not only enhance visitor experience but also accelerate economic upliftment and inclusive development in the Terai region. Increased tourist footfall, sustainable livelihood opportunities and improved infrastructure will help fulfil Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of making Uttar Pradesh a leading eco-tourism hub. The measures are also expected to support biodiversity conservation while positioning the Tharu community at the heart of the state’s eco-tourism growth story.
