Uttar Pradesh Emerges as a Major Cancer Treatment Hub; Patients No Longer Need to Travel to Delhi or Mumbai

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has emerged as one of the country’s largest and most accessible cancer treatment hubs, bringing significant relief to patients who earlier had to travel to metros like Delhi and Mumbai for advanced care. With a strong network of super-specialty cancer institutions established in Lucknow and Varanasi, the state now offers comprehensive facilities ranging from screening and diagnosis to surgery and advanced treatment under one coordinated system.

The transformation is the result of sustained, multi-layered efforts by the Yogi Adityanath government to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure across the state. The impact is evident in the growing number of patients from Bihar and even Nepal who are now seeking treatment in Uttar Pradesh, reflecting rising trust in the state’s medical facilities.

Lucknow Cancer Institute Sets National Benchmark

The Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute at Chak Gajaria in Lucknow has become a leading national centre for cancer care. Equipped with 220 beds and state-of-the-art facilities for radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgical oncology, the institute provides integrated cancer treatment under one roof, reducing delays and improving patient outcomes.

Varanasi Centres Prove Lifeline for Purvanchal

In Varanasi, the Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre and the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital have emerged as lifelines for patients from eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions. Established on the Tata Memorial Centre model, these institutions were developed through the combined efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Strong referral systems, specialist consultations, and technological collaboration between Lucknow and Varanasi ensure timely and effective treatment.

Robust System from Screening to Surgery

Over the past three years, government hospitals across Uttar Pradesh have recorded significant improvements in cancer OPD services, surgeries, and treatment outcomes. Early detection has been strengthened through Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) clinics at the district level. Special awareness campaigns are being conducted in rural areas, particularly for breast and cervical cancer screening among women, enabling diagnosis at early stages and helping reduce mortality rates.

CM’s Directive: No Treatment Should Stop Due to Lack of Funds

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued clear instructions that no patient’s treatment should be halted due to financial constraints. Under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, a large number of cancer patients are receiving free treatment of up to ₹5 lakh. Uttar Pradesh ranks among the leading states in the issuance of Ayushman cards. In addition, the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund has become a critical safety net for patients suffering from serious illnesses, providing direct financial assistance through hospitals.

Focus on Advanced Technology and Pediatric Oncology

Cancer care in the state is also being strengthened through the integration of modern technologies. Departments of paediatric oncology at King George’s Medical University and other institutions have been upgraded to prioritise cancer treatment for children. Simultaneously, steps are being taken to incorporate artificial intelligence-based tools in cancer screening and treatment, further enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and patient care.

With expanding infrastructure, affordable treatment, and a patient-centric approach, Uttar Pradesh is fast establishing itself as a national leader in cancer care—ensuring quality treatment closer to home and saving patients both time and money.
