State aims for 10% share in national economy by 2026; CM stresses need for clear roadmap to become a trillion-dollar economy

Lucknow – In a high-level review meeting held on Monday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the state’s economic growth as a transformation “from potential to performance,” highlighting that the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is estimated to touch ₹29.6 lakh crore in 2024–25—an increase of nearly 80% compared to 2020–21.

The Chief Minister said this remarkable progress is a result of strong policy reforms and aligns with the vision of a developed India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. “Uttar Pradesh’s economy is no longer just a set of rising numbers—it reflects real change on the ground,” Yogi Adityanath emphasized.

According to data presented in the meeting, UP’s share in the national economy has grown from 8.4% to 8.9% in this period. The state now targets a 10% share by 2026, for which the CM called for a well-defined, goal-driven strategy.

Industrial and Agricultural Growth

The CM noted structural changes in the state’s economy, with consistent growth in manufacturing and services, while the agriculture share is gradually declining. He identified the “Make in UP” model as the future of industrial policy and directed officials to promote the establishment of new units in rural and semi-urban areas.

In agriculture, food grain production is expected to reach 722 lakh metric tonnes in 2024–25—an increase of 100 LMT from 2020–21. However, the CM pointed out wide disparities in district-level productivity, with some districts yielding 46 quintals per hectare and others just 30. He directed officials to bridge the gap through technical support and farmer awareness drives.

Livestock and Dairy Sector

Uttar Pradesh leads the nation in milk production and has made notable progress in egg production. However, CM Adityanath emphasized the need to improve per-animal productivity. He called for better breed management, feeding practices, and regular data analysis in the dairy sector to enhance outcomes.

Manufacturing and Employment

The state now has over 27,000 registered factories. The CM stressed the need for equitable industrial development across all districts to generate employment and boost revenue. He directed District Industry Centers to strengthen outreach and support for new units.

IT and Services Sector Boom

The Chief Minister praised the surge in IT services export through Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), which reached ₹46,800 crore in 2024–25—a 40% jump from 2021–22. He called the sector “a field of infinite opportunity for youth.” Other sectors such as tourism, hospitality, and trade also saw encouraging post-pandemic revival, with a steady rise in tourist footfall.

Revenue Growth: GST and Excise

The CM reviewed the state’s two major revenue streams—GST and Excise. In FY 2024–25, UP collected over ₹1.49 lakh crore in GST, marking a 6.6% year-on-year increase. Excise revenue reached ₹52,574 crore, reflecting a 15% jump. CM Adityanath called these figures “evidence of revenue self-reliance” and emphasized channeling the gains into expanded public services and welfare programs.

Transport Sector and Future Potential

Calling road transport a “high-potential sector,” the CM instructed officials to identify new private bus routes to improve mobility and create new revenue streams. He added that this would also generate significant employment in the sector.

Focus on Data Authenticity and Sectoral Roadmaps

In a strong message to the departments, the CM underscored the importance of accurate and up-to-date data for policymaking. He directed that clear, time-bound, and result-oriented roadmaps be prepared for all major sectors—agriculture, manufacturing, services, energy, and human resources—with coordinated oversight by the planning department.

“Reliable data is the bedrock of effective policymaking. It is only with this foundation that Uttar Pradesh will advance rapidly toward becoming one of the country’s leading developed states,” Yogi Adityanath concluded.
