LUCKNOW – The UP Yoddhas have unveiled their new leadership for the upcoming Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 12, naming star defender Sumit Sangwan as the team captain and his long-time defensive partner, Ashu Singh, as the vice-captain. The announcement signals a renewed focus on nurturing homegrown talent, as both players have risen through the franchise’s ranks since their professional debuts.
Sumit (26) and Ashu (27) began their journey with UP Yoddhas in Season 7 as New Young Players (NYPs) and have since become the backbone of the team’s defensive setup. Their rise from promising rookies to leaders is a testament to GMR Sports’ long-term vision of nurturing talent from within the system, focusing on loyalty, performance, and consistent growth.
Renowned for his agility, timing, and tactical intelligence, Sumit has consistently ranked among the league’s top defenders in recent seasons. His appointment as captain reflects not only his on-mat excellence but also his ability to inspire and lead from the front.
Ashu Singh, a veteran cover defender for the Yoddhas, has impressed with his relentless work rate, selfless gameplay, and composure under pressure. His defensive partnership with Sumit has been the cornerstone of the team’s strategy.
