Unique Navratri Initiative in Baghpat: ‘Nanhi Kali’ Empowers Daughters, Mary Kom to Inspire Young Girls

Lucknow/Baghpat: In a remarkable blend of tradition, empowerment, and sustainability, a unique initiative titled ‘Nanhi Kali’ is set to be launched in Baghpat on the first day of Navratri. The programme aims to celebrate and सम्मान daughters while promoting women’s empowerment and environmental awareness. Renowned boxing champion Mary Kom will grace the occasion as the chief guest, adding inspiration to the initiative.

Organised in line with the vision of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the event seeks to highlight the importance of girls in society and encourage their growth across fields such as education, sports, and leadership.

At the heart of the initiative is the ‘Nanhi Kali’ doll, a symbolic creation crafted by rural women using recycled plastic and leftover fabric. These eco-friendly dolls not only represent the strength and potential of young girls but also send a strong message about environmental conservation. By converting plastic waste into meaningful products, the initiative reflects the idea of “waste to wealth” and supports sustainable practices.

District Magistrate Asmita Lal noted that the dolls are made using fibre derived from discarded plastic bottles, significantly contributing to waste reduction. The effort aligns with a broader “zero waste” vision, positioning Baghpat as a model district for innovative environmental solutions.

Beyond symbolism, the initiative is also creating tangible economic opportunities. Rural women involved in making these dolls are gaining access to livelihood options and becoming financially independent. This grassroots effort is further strengthening campaigns like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Mission Shakti, while also promoting the “Vocal for Local” movement.

Officials believe that celebrating Navratri as a festival of Nari Shakti through such initiatives will help foster a positive societal mindset towards daughters. The presence of Mary Kom—whose journey from humble beginnings to global sporting success is widely admired—is expected to motivate young girls to dream big and pursue their ambitions fearlessly.

The event will not only honour daughters but also showcase a powerful convergence of cultural values, women’s empowerment, and environmental responsibility. With its innovative approach, the ‘Nanhi Kali’ initiative is emerging as a symbol of change—where tradition meets transformation, and small steps lead to meaningful impact.
