New Delhi: To reduce the alarming number of road accident fatalities in India, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has launched the “Rahagir Yojana.” Under this life-saving initiative, any citizen who helps a road accident victim reach a hospital will be rewarded with Rs 25,000.
In addition to the cash incentive, the government will also cover the victim’s medical expenses for up to 7 days or Rs 1.5 lakh—whichever is less. This is aimed at removing the hesitation many people feel about helping accident victims due to fears of legal complications or hospital bills.
Gadkari emphasized the plan’s potential, stating, “We hope this initiative can help save up to 50,000 lives annually.” The move is part of a broader national road safety campaign aimed at encouraging bystander intervention and building a culture of compassion and swift action during emergencies. With India witnessing over 1.5 lakh road accident deaths annually, the Rahagir Yojana could become a game-changer in public road safety.
