UK Data Watchdog Investigates TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur Over Children’s Data Handling

London: The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched an investigation into the social media platform TikTok over concerns about its handling of children’s data. The probe aims to assess how TikTok processes data of users aged 13 to 17 and whether it adheres to the UK’s data protection laws, including the Children’s Code.

According to Information Commissioner John Edwards, there are significant risks associated with the handling of children’s data, particularly regarding the potential exposure of sensitive information. However, the investigation itself does not imply that TikTok has violated any laws.

Why Is TikTok Under Investigation?

TikTok’s algorithm is designed to analyze user engagement patterns to recommend content tailored to their interests. This process relies on personal data, including user profiles, content consumption habits, and interactions. Edwards emphasized that this aspect of TikTok’s operations necessitates a thorough review by the ICO to ensure compliance with regulations protecting children’s privacy.

TikTok’s Response

In a statement to the BBC, TikTok asserted that it has stringent measures in place to safeguard the privacy of teenage users. The company stated that its systems operate under “strict and comprehensive measures that protect the privacy and safety of teens.” It also claimed to have “robust restrictions on the content allowed in teens’ feeds.”

Investigations Into Reddit and Imgur

Alongside TikTok, the ICO has initiated similar probes into Reddit and Imgur, focusing on their approaches to verifying users’ ages and enforcing content restrictions for minors.

John Edwards noted that platforms with age limits must ensure effective enforcement mechanisms. “There are various technologies available to verify user ages, and the level of rigor depends on the potential risks associated with children accessing these sites,” he stated.

Reddit, which has become the UK’s fifth most popular platform, and Imgur, a widely used image-sharing site, are both under scrutiny for their compliance with child data protection laws.

Edwards further warned that if any of these companies are found to be in violation of UK regulations, “there will be consequences.”
