U.S. Warns of New Sanctions if Russia Fails to Take Concrete Steps Toward Ending Ukraine War

Washington, D.C.: The United States has issued a stern warning to Russia, stating that fresh sanctions will be imposed if Moscow fails to take concrete steps toward ending the war in Ukraine. The message was delivered by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Rubio noted that the U.S. has received indications suggesting Russia may be drafting its terms for a potential ceasefire, which could open the door for further negotiations. “We’re awaiting those proposals to better understand President Putin’s true intentions,” said Rubio.

Sanctions Inevitable If Russia Delays Peace Process

When asked whether the U.S. would consider additional sanctions if Russia avoids serious peace talks, Rubio was unequivocal. “If it becomes clear that Russia has no real interest in negotiation and only seeks to prolong the conflict, then yes—further sanctions will be our next step,” he stated.

President Trump Exercising Caution

Rubio also revealed that President Donald Trump is currently refraining from issuing direct threats of sanctions to avoid jeopardizing diplomatic efforts. “The President believes that premature threats might cause Russia to back away from the negotiating table,” he added.

Two-Hour Call Between Trump and Putin

The Secretary of State disclosed that a recent two-hour phone call between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin led to a breakthrough, with both Moscow and Kyiv showing willingness to initiate a ceasefire and resume peace talks.

Vatican Offers to Host Peace Talks

In a significant diplomatic development, the Vatican has volunteered to host the potential negotiations. Newly elected Pope Leo XIV has expressed readiness to facilitate dialogue between Russia and Ukraine. This comes after the previous round of talks in Istanbul ended without success, although both sides did agree on a prisoner exchange.

All Eyes on Putin

As the international community watches closely, attention now turns to Vladimir Putin’s next move. Will he move forward with genuine peace proposals or continue the war effort? The U.S. has made it clear: if Russia fails to demonstrate sincerity in pursuing peace, pressure will intensify.

Rubio concluded, “We are at a pivotal moment. This is a test of Russia’s commitment to peace. Any insincerity will not go unanswered.”
