U.P. Vidhan Sabha session starts amid tight security

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha’s Winter Assembly session commenced in Lucknow  under heightened security arrangements. The session is set to focus on several pressing issues, with opposition parties, led by the Samajwadi Party (SP), preparing to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on various fronts.

Key topics for discussion include the recent Sambhal violence, anti-encroachment drives, preparations for the Mahakumbh, and measures to prevent tragedies like the hospital fire in Jhansi. The Samajwadi Party has already signaled its intent to highlight communal tensions and hold the government accountable for any disruptions to harmony.

Security Measures

Deputy Commissioner of Police Raveena Tyagi emphasized that comprehensive security arrangements are in place. The Rapid Action Force (RAF), Provincial Civil Services (PCS), and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) have been deployed, along with extensive CCTV surveillance. Traffic diversion plans have also been implemented to manage movement during the session.

Legislative Agenda

The assembly’s opening day focuses on formal business. On December 17, a supplemental budget, estimated to range between ₹12,000 and ₹15,000 crore, will be presented. The budget discussion and passage are scheduled for December 18, with legislative sessions continuing through December 19 and 20.

Opposition’s Strategy

Images of Samajwadi Party protests outside the Assembly have surfaced, signaling their readiness to confront the government. SP leader Mata Prasad Pandey stated that his party would raise concerns about escalating communal tensions, particularly in Sambhal, and demand accountability from the government. “We will hold the government responsible for any attempts to disrupt communal harmony,” he asserted.

The session, which concludes on December 20, is anticipated to witness significant debate and possible uproar as the opposition raises critical issues affecting the state.
