Two New Private Universities Approved in Uttar Pradesh

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ramayana University to Begin Operations in Ayodhya; Letter of Intent Issued for Ajay Kumar Garg University in Ghaziabad

Lucknow: In a significant move aimed at expanding higher education in Uttar Pradesh, the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has granted operational approval to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ramayana University in Ayodhya, and issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) for the proposed Ajay Kumar Garg University in Ghaziabad.

State Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay, while sharing details of the development, said that the state government is actively promoting innovation and infrastructure development in the higher education sector through private sector participation. “Uttar Pradesh is on its way to becoming a leading state in education in the coming years. These approvals are part of our commitment to ensure high-quality education and accessible higher education institutions for youth at the local level,” he stated.

The Maharishi Ramayan Vidyapeeth Trust, based in Delhi, has been granted a Letter of Authorization to formally operate the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ramayana University in accordance with the Uttar Pradesh Private University (Amendment) Act, 2025. The university can now commence operations as per the stipulated conditions and government notification.

Meanwhile, the Ajay Kumar Garg University, proposed by the Indian Institute of Management and Engineering Society, Ghaziabad, has received a Letter of Intent under Section 6 of the Uttar Pradesh Private University Act, 2019. To proceed with its establishment, the proposed university must fulfill several conditions, including maintaining a corpus fund of ₹5 crore, securing 20 acres of land in an urban area, and developing a minimum of 24,000 square meters of academic infrastructure.

Present at the announcement were Minister of State for Higher Education Rajni Tiwari, Principal Secretary for Higher Education M.P. Agrawal, Special Secretary Nidhi Srivastava, and other senior departmental officials.

These developments are part of the state’s broader mission to enhance access, quality, and infrastructure in higher education, while fostering academic excellence and regional development.
