Bareilly: The two-day AIOS Glaucoma Laboratory and Video Film Festival concluded at SRMS Medical College. Organized by the Department of Ophthalmology at SRMS in collaboration with the Bareilly Ophthalmology Society (BOS), the event witnessed participation from renowned ophthalmologists across the country.
Speaking at the event, Professor (Dr.) Neelima Mehrotra, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at SRMS, emphasized the importance of vision, stating, “Eyesight is the most significant of our five senses. Life becomes dull and dark without it. To keep our lives illuminated, it is crucial to protect our eyes from rapidly growing diseases like glaucoma.”
The program included scientific sessions, video lectures, and live trabeculectomy surgery demonstrations to educate delegates and students. Experts presented their research papers on glaucoma, discussing the impact of diabetes and other diseases on glaucoma patients.
The inaugural ceremony commenced with the rendition of the Saraswati Vandana and the institution’s anthem. College Principal Air Marshal (Retd.) Dr. M.S. Butola, along with distinguished guests Dr. Devendra Sood, Director of the Institute of Glaucoma at Indira Gandhi Eye Hospital, Gurugram, BOS President Dr. Chandrashekhar Yadav, Dr. Kunwar Gaurav Singh, and Organizing Chairperson Dr. Neelima Mehrotra, lit the ceremonial lamp. Dr. Mehrotra welcomed the guests and delegates, underscoring the importance of knowledge and eyesight in life.
Dr. Butola highlighted the college’s achievements and called the CME (Continuing Medical Education) session essential in raising awareness about glaucoma prevention. Addressing the attendees, Dr. Devendra Sood emphasized the growing role of AI in medicine, stating that while AI can be beneficial, it should be used cautiously and logically. “For instance, if AI is asked how many cigarettes a pregnant woman can smoke daily, it may respond with four or five. However, no doctor or common person would accept such an answer as correct. Hence, AI should be used wisely,” he explained.

Dr. Sood also acknowledged the valuable insights gained through the CME session, which covered various aspects of glaucoma management. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Kunwar Gaurav Singh, expressing gratitude to all experts and delegates. Principal Dr. M.S. Butola honored the distinguished guests with mementos. The program was hosted by Dr. Neelima Singla and Dr. Anujnya Singh.
