WASHINGTON/NEW YORK – US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States will lead to a positive outcome without major obstacles. His recent remarks, which signal a shift in tone, come after a period of strained relations and are being viewed as a significant step toward improving bilateral ties.
Recently President Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he was pleased to see negotiations continuing to address trade barriers. “I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks,” he wrote. “I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries!”
This statement follows months of friction, with relations between the two nations reaching a low point over US tariffs and India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The Trump administration had imposed a 25% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods, along with an additional 25% penalty on Russian oil imports, bringing the total duty to 50%. India had described these tariffs as “unfair and irrational” and defended its energy procurement as being based on national interest and market dynamics.

Just last week, Trump had softened his rhetoric, acknowledging a “very special relationship” with India. Speaking from the Oval Office, he stated, “I always will. I’ll always be friends with [Prime Minister] Modi. He’s a great Prime Minister. But I just don’t like what he is doing at this particular moment. But India and the United States have a very special relationship. There is nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion.”

In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed his appreciation for Trump’s positive view on the bilateral relationship. In a post on social media, Modi said he “deeply appreciates and fully reciprocates President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties.” The Prime Minister also expressed confidence that the ongoing negotiations would unlock the limitless potential of the partnership.
This renewed optimism from both leaders could pave the way for a more stable and prosperous economic relationship moving forward.
