Triptii Dimri on Embracing Darker Roles: “I’d Love to Play a Character Like Kajol’s in Gupt

Mumbai — Known for her ethereal screen presence and emotionally charged performances, Triptii Dimri is now ready to explore uncharted territory. As she prepares for her much-awaited film Dhadak 2, the actress has revealed a new artistic aspiration — taking on a negative role, specifically one with the impact and depth of Kajol’s iconic character in the 1997 thriller Gupt.

In a recent conversation, Triptii opened up about her evolving vision as an actor and her desire to dive into the psyche of characters who operate in the grey.

“Kajol was brilliant in Gupt! I’d love to do something like that,” she shared. “Earlier, negative roles were boxed in as villains. But today, characters are more layered. They have motivations, contradictions, and emotional depth. That’s where the challenge lies—and the magic of acting.”

Having already proved her mettle in emotionally textured films like Bulbbul, Qala, and Laila Majnu, Triptii has become a face synonymous with layered storytelling and vulnerability on screen. But a dark, psychologically complex role would mark a first in her journey.

“The guy who played the negative character in our film is such a simple, soft-spoken person. You’d never guess he could be so dark on screen. That really inspired me. I want to explore that space too—step into shoes that are far removed from who I am and learn something new.”

A Versatile Star in the Making

Triptii has been steadily climbing the ranks in Bollywood, praised for her ability to immerse herself fully in each character she portrays. Whether it’s the poetic melancholy of Qala or the delicate vulnerability of Laila Majnu, she brings a rare depth and restraint to her performances. Her work evokes empathy and introspection, often leaving viewers both moved and haunted.

Yet, there remains one shade she hasn’t tapped into—antagonism. A foray into the world of morally ambiguous or even outright sinister characters could showcase an entirely new dimension of her craft.

“I think every actor should push beyond what they’ve done before. A grey-shaded role lets you break rules, explore extremes, and tap into your darker instincts. That, to me, is thrilling,” she added.

What’s Next for Triptii Dimri?

Up next, Triptii stars in Dhadak 2, a standalone sequel to the 2018 romantic drama, where she shares the screen with Siddhant Chaturvedi. Directed by Shazia Iqbal, the film is slated for release on August 1, and early buzz suggests that it promises both intensity and freshness in storytelling.

Beyond Dhadak 2, Triptii’s filmography is shaping up to be both ambitious and eclectic. She will feature in:

  • Spirit, an action-drama helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga
  • Arjun Ustara, a period romance
  • Animal Park, reportedly a psychological sequel to Animal
  • An untitled Imtiaz Ali project, which marks her first collaboration with the auteur filmmaker known for bringing complex female protagonists to life

A New Era of Hindi Cinema Heroines

Triptii Dimri’s interest in playing morally complex characters also reflects the changing face of Hindi cinema heroines. Gone are the days when female roles were limited to romantic interests or sidekicks. Today’s leading ladies are nuanced, messy, vulnerable, strong—and yes, sometimes dangerous.

With actresses like Tabu, Vidya Balan, and now Alia Bhatt proving that layered negative roles can win both critical acclaim and audience love, Triptii’s aspiration seems not just timely, but inevitable.

The prospect of seeing her shed her innocence for something darker and more unpredictable has fans intrigued. If her past roles are any indication, Triptii will not just portray a negative role—she’ll own it, reinvent it, and leave us talking long after the credits roll.

As she herself puts it:

“It’s all about discovering new parts of yourself through the characters you play. And I think I’m ready.”

Triptii Dimri: graceful on the surface, fierce underneath—ready to challenge, to surprise, and to slay in the shadows.
