Travis Head spells out how Steve Smith made life simpler for him

Mumbai: Speaking exclusively to Star Sports, Australia cricketer Travis Head spoke on his consistency when playing against India: I said earlier in the series, we play them a hell of a lot. So, yeah, it’s nice that I feel in form at the moment and nice to make the most of it. It’s very rare in the game that you find yourself in positions like this and at the start of the series, I think I’ve outdone what I thought my expectations were and yeah, pretty special to be able to back it up this week. I felt like I batted really well in Perth and in Adelaide and to come out and then do the job again is nice. It’s never, ever guaranteed. So, nice to be able to do a job again today.”

Speaking exclusively to Star Sports, Australia cricketer Travis Head spoke on how approached his innings: “I think, yeah, I think once you see it so much and you obviously got set plans against different guys, it’s hugely challenging. I haven’t felt quite in control once in the series. Facing off, Jasprit comes on a few different times, a few tough spells. I felt I got lucky a couple of times in the back end innings today where I would have liked to play a little bit better and I was probably a little bit fatigued at the right of the back end. But, yeah, I looked. Yeah, nice to be able to do the job.”

Speaking exclusively to Star Sports, Australia cricketer Travis Head spoke on his thought process during the game: “Oh, yeah, I think every other guy’s going to have different ways of going about it. I think for me it’s about being as positive as I can because my feet move better. I get into better positions and my forward defense was really – I felt like I started really well again today. I always felt like the – I think the back end of the innings, I was probably a bit tired. I wanted to get after it a little bit. So, the second new ball, I probably could have been a bit hungrier, but I felt like at the start of the innings, I moved really well. I let the ball come to me. But I think the top order, me and Steve just spoke about it before. I think the top three guys did a fantastic job again. We talk about sort of the first 30 overs around Australia. Adelaide Oval was massive 30 overs and here as well. That new ball, the second new ball, felt like it did a lot. So, no doubt it did a little bit at the start of the innings as well. So, I felt like those top three guys set the platform again for us to walk out in the 30th over.”

Speaking exclusively to Star Sports, Australia cricketer Travis Head spoke on his mentality during the game: “I’m just looking to score. If the game presents opportunity to score runs, I want to score runs. I’ve done that for a few years now. Like I said, it’s a tough game. It’s a brutal game. I’m not in it for milestones. It’s great that I’ve been able to take a couple off in the last couple of weeks. But truly, I just want to play well for the boys in the dressing room. I love the group. I have a great time doing it. I enjoy what I do, but I’m just out there to try to do what I think the team needs from me.”

Speaking exclusively to Star Sports, Australia cricketer Travis Head spoke on his partnership with Steve Smith: “I’ve always enjoyed playing with Steve, and I think you go back to that Test Championship. I’ve always felt when he’s in the zone and when he’s batting really well, I almost go unnoticed. Back in his, I’m not going to say heyday, but in the couple of years of Test where he proper dominated and didn’t ever feel like he was going to get out, I felt like I was invisible at the other end, and all the plans and everything went into Steven. Today felt a little bit like that. He rode his luck a little bit, but I felt like he was moving really well. I felt like I wasn’t going to lose my partner at the other end, which means that I can be a little bit more relaxed in things, express myself a little bit more, knowing that, hey, at the other end, my partner’s going to hang around for me. I just enjoy the group. I enjoy the coaching staff.”

Speaking exclusively to Star Sports, Australia cricketer Travis Head spoke on getting familiar with playing versus India: “I just said before, I feel like I’ve been playing here enough to know that I guess I’ve got a blueprint. I felt like today they moved through some really good plans. I felt under pressure most of the time. I felt like I had to be on my game most of the time, and I’m really pleased with the way I was able to work through those gears. Obviously, short ball plan, spin. I thought Jadeja started really well. There was a bit of bounce and spin. I’m very pleased with how I started against him, and I’m pleased with how they worked through the gears. Yeah, I picked those moments up, but India definitely come with some different plans today. As a batter, all you want to try and do is get through those plans. We worked again today, which is nice, but look, I’ve got to start fresh again when I get another opportunity. Quick one moving forward into the Test match. The new ball looked like it quickened up a little bit. Second new ball. We were talking about a mark on it. There was maybe a thought about declaration, but it never really seemed like the right time.”
