Three Notorious Chain Snatchers Arrested, Stolen Jewelry and Motorbikes Recovered

Lucknow: In a joint operation led by the Crime Branch, Surveillance/Crime Team of DCP North, and Aliganj Police, three habitual chain snatchers were apprehended from near Firoz Gandhi School, thwarting yet another attempt at daylight robbery in the city.

Incident Background

On May 4, 2025, Dr. Lajwanti Gupta, a resident of House No. 12, Chandralok Colony, Aliganj, lodged a complaint at Aliganj Police Station stating that an unidentified man had snatched her gold chain. An FIR (No. 109/25) under Section 304(2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) was registered, and the hunt for the culprits began.

Swift Action and Arrest

On May 6, 2025, while patrolling the area near Firoz Gandhi School based on electronic surveillance and local intelligence, police teams received a tip-off that three chain snatchers involved in the recent Chandralok incident were arriving from the Dandahiya side on two motorcycles. Acting swiftly, the police intercepted the suspects who tried to flee but were cornered and arrested.

  1. Surendra (19)

    • S/o Pappu, resident of Kathwara, PS Bakshi Ka Talab, Lucknow

    • Occupation: Farmer

  2. Akash Yadav alias Shera Yadav (20)

    • S/o Lavkush Yadav, resident of Parvatpur, PS Bakshi Ka Talab, Lucknow

    • Occupation: Vegetable vendor

  3. Deepu alias Dabbbu Gupta (20)

    • S/o Amardev Gupta, native of Narainapur, Chhapra (Bihar); current resident of Satyam Bihar, PS Indiranagar, Lucknow

    • Occupation: Ironwork laborer

During interrogation, the accused also confessed to snatching a locket from the Itaunja area a few days earlier.

Legal Proceedings

With further evidence recovered during the arrest, including a gold-colored broken chain and locket, sections under BNS were enhanced to include 317(2). The accused were arrested at approximately 4:30 AM near Chandralok-Dandahiya and have been informed of their charges under Sections 304(2)/317(2) BNS. Police from neighboring stations were also alerted for potential links with other ongoing cases.
