Lucknow: The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, will celebrate three significant events this year—its 6th Research Day, 6th Alumni Day, and 42nd Foundation Day—on 12th, 13th, and 14th December 2025, respectively.
The tradition of observing Research Day began in 2020 under the able leadership of Prof. R. K. Dhiman, Director, SGPGIMS, with the objective of fostering a strong research culture within the institute.
Dean Dr. Shaleen Kumar stated that research is one of the three core pillars of SGPGIMS. It plays a crucial role in developing quality healthcare solutions tailored to local needs at affordable costs. Research drives innovation and supports the national vision of promoting indigenous development and manufacturing.
Director Prof. R. K. Dhiman, who initiated the Research Day tradition, expressed his satisfaction with the growing awareness and enthusiasm for research among faculty and students. He noted a substantial increase in the number of poster presentations compared to previous years. This momentum has also boosted both intramural and extramural research grants at SGPGIMS.
Prof. Vinita Agrawal, Faculty In-charge, Research, informed that the 6th Research Day will showcase the institute’s research activities at the Lecture Theatre Complex. Faculty members, students, and research scholars will present their work. The keynote lecture will be delivered by world-renowned geneticist Dr. Vinod Scaria. (Program schedule enclosed.)
Assistant FIR Dr. Atul Garg shared that approximately 320 posters—225 from students and 95 from faculty—have been submitted for presentation. Senior faculty members from other institutions will evaluate the posters. A total of 16 awards in the faculty category and 24 awards in the student category will be presented on the Foundation Day, 14th December 2025.
Following Research Day, the 6th Alumni Day will be celebrated on 13th December.
Registrar, SGPGIMS Col Varun Bajpai informed that for four decades, SGPGIMS has been delivering high-quality education through its DM, MCh, MD, PhD programs, along with postdoctoral fellowships, postdoctoral certificate courses, and senior residency programs across various specialties. In recent years, B.Sc. and M.Sc. Nursing, as well as B.Sc. (8 technical courses) and M.Sc. (6 technical courses) in Medical Technology, have strengthened its academic offerings. The college of Nursing has excelled and has the mentorship status for providing support to other Nursing Colleges.
Col Varun Bajpai, further elaborated that over the last 30 years, a large number of residents, students, and scholars have trained at SGPGIMS. It is a matter of immense pride that graduates of this prestigious institute now hold distinguished leadership positions across India and abroad. Their rigorous training—emphasizing basic, clinical, and scientific research—has been instrumental in shaping their successful careers. The strong academic environment, close-knit departmental and hostel communities, and the lush green campus are cherished fondly by alumni.

With this sentiment in mind, the Alumni Cell was established under the supervision of Director Prof. R. K. Dhiman, himself one of the earliest alumni of SGPGIMS. Alumni serve as ambassadors of the institute, contributing significantly to its growth and visibility while maintaining deep professional and emotional ties with their alma mater. This year, around 200 alumni from across the globe, along with their families, are expected to participate in the Alumni Day celebrations. The program will feature cultural performances, family engagements, and sports activities.
The celebrations will culminate with the 42nd Foundation Day on 14th December, marking the institute’s remarkable achievements in teaching, training, and research, and acknowledging the invaluable contributions of its staff.
Since its inception in 1980, SGPGIMS has grown steadily to become one of the foremost institutions providing exceptional healthcare services not only to the people of Uttar Pradesh but also to neighboring states such as Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan, as well as patients from Nepal.
According to Director Prof. Radha Krishna Dhiman, “SGPGIMS is committed to continuous improvement, aspiring to become the premier hospital in India.”
Foundation Day festivities will begin with the distribution of nutritional packs and “Get Well Soon” cards to all inpatients, reaffirming that patient care lies at the heart of every activity at the institute.
As in previous years, the Department of Transfusion Medicine will organize a Voluntary Blood Donation Camp. Additionally, a tree plantation drive will be conducted across the campus.
Foundation day Oration will be delivered by Dr. Abhijaat Chandrakant Sheth, Chairman, NMC.
The Foundation Day event promises to be both celebratory and meaningful.
