Lucknow: Akanksha Theater Arts, Lucknow staged the renowned Russian play “The Proposal” by Anton Chekhov as its second presentation under the Repertory Grant 2025-26 from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The performance, directed by Tushar Bajpai, took place at the Local International Buddhist Research Institute and captivated the audience with a blend of humor and life lessons.
The event began with Colonel Sanjay Shrivastava lighting the ceremonial lamp and blessing the performers. The institute’s president, B.N. Ojha, along with Alok Kumar Pandey and secretary Achala Bose, honored the chief guest with a shawl, memento, and bouquet.
The play humorously yet poignantly illustrates how anger and quarrels can destroy relationships. Chekhov emphasizes the importance of controlling one’s temper, avoiding petty arguments, and being ready to forgive mistakes. In today’s world, where people often focus only on others’ strengths while ignoring flaws, maintaining harmonious relationships has become increasingly challenging.

Set in late 20th-century rural Russia, the play centers on a seemingly simple marriage proposal, but Chekhov transforms it into a sharp commentary on human folly and insight. The compact narrative captures the eccentricities and vulnerabilities of the characters within a single property, creating moments of laughter and reflection.
In the performance, Tushar Bajpai played Ivan Lomov, Tripti Singh portrayed Natalia, and Abhishek Singh took on the role of Stepan Chubukov. Their vibrant performances drew hearty laughter from the audience while conveying the play’s deeper message about patience, understanding, and maintaining cordial relationships.
