Sustainability Hackathon held at Bharwara STP on World Earth Day: SGPGI Nursing Students and Acid Attack Survivors Participated
Lucknow: On the occasion of World Earth Day, a Sustainability Hackathon was organized by SUEZ India at the Bharwara STP Plant. Nursing students from Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) participated in an educational visit and actively engaged in discussions centered around environmental conservation.
The students planted saplings within the plant premises, sending a strong message of environmental protection. On this occasion, Rajesh Mathpal, Project Director at SUEZ India, stated that while we often talk about the environmental impact of fashion, food, and fossil fuels, we tend to overlook how everyday items—like notebooks, pens, and pencils—also contribute to climate change. He shared that in 2018 alone, global paper consumption reached 422 million metric tons. Moreover, plastic-based stationery is extremely difficult to recycle, often ending up in landfills.
The day also saw the participation of acid attack survivor women at other end of the city, who raised awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastic and its impact on the environment. They encouraged people to adopt jute bags and other eco-friendly alternatives. Their messages were widely appreciated. It is worth noting that the SUEZ Foundation India, based in Lucknow, provides ongoing support to these acid attack survivors.
At the conclusion of the program, all participants of the Sustainability Hackathon were honored with certificates of appreciation. This initiative by SUEZ India aimed not only to raise awareness among youth about environmental conservation but also to actively involve them in sustainable practices.
This event served not just as a platform for awareness but also as a meaningful step toward connecting future generations with the concept of sustainable development.
