Washington: The location in Texas that houses Elon Musk’s rocket company, SpaceX, has officially been declared a city and named “Starbase.” The move to formally recognize “Starbase” as a city was put to a vote among a small group of residents, predominantly employees of Musk’s company, and received unanimous approval.
According to online results released by the Cameron County Elections Department, 212 votes were cast in favor of the proposition, with only six votes against it. Musk celebrated the development on his social media platform ‘X’, posting that it is “now officially a city.”
Starbase serves as the launch site for SpaceX’s ambitious rocket program. This program has secured contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The overarching goal of this program is to send astronauts to the Moon and, eventually, to Mars.

Musk first proposed the idea of “Starbase” in 2021, and the approval for the new city was widely anticipated, given that the majority of the 283 eligible voters in the area are believed to be SpaceX employees. Situated in South Texas near the Mexican border, the newly recognized city spans a compact area of just 3.9 square kilometers.
