Washington: According to Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, societal decay in the US is the primary issue that has resulted in a high rate of drug consumption among young people.
The Mexican president asked the US government to enhance youth programs and address the factors that contribute to drug addiction and the use of opioids like fentanyl during his regularly scheduled daily news conference on Tuesday. According to Xinhua news agency, Lopez Obrador told reporters at the National Palace in Mexico City that the drug problem in the US is related to a “loss of values.” He said, “It’s not an easy issue to resolve… they must address the causes.” “I think they forgot about that, and individualism, materialism, and consumerism began to predominate, and that is part of the crisis.”
He said that many of Mexico’s customs and family values are still upheld, unlike in the US, and that this strengthens society.
Once again, Lopez Obrador urged the US government to confront the “vacuum” caused by family breakdown rather than blaming Mexican immigrants for the country’s drug issues.
