Mumbai | South-Bollywood actress and singer Shruti Haasan has spoken candidly about her personal life and mental health, revealing the struggles she faced over the past several years. The daughter of actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika admitted to experiencing prolonged anxiety, which led her to take a break from acting in 2018. During this period, even routine daily tasks became challenging for her.
Growing Up in a Creative Household
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Shruti reflected on her upbringing, saying that her household always placed a high value on art and creativity. “My parents are fluent in the language of art. I focus on my priorities, but I also try my hand at many other things. My family has always supported me in moving forward,” she shared.

Acting Hiatus in 2018
Shruti revealed that her break from acting in 2018 was partly due to personal relationships, including a breakup with theater actor Michael Korsel. This period marked a significant pause in her professional life as she prioritized her emotional well-being.
Lessons From Separation
Reflecting on the experience, Shruti said, “Separation brought me only good. It was a time to understand myself and focus on my mental health. I had been struggling with depression for many years, which made even everyday tasks difficult.”

Self-Discovery in London
Shruti also recounted her time living alone in London, describing it as a period of self-exploration. “I didn’t know what I was looking for or who I was. Living alone, writing music every day, doing laundry, cooking, traveling to museums via the metro—these were unforgettable experiences that helped me reconnect with myself,” she said.
Moving Forward After Another Breakup
After Michael, Shruti dated painter Shantanu Hazarika, but that relationship ended in 2024. Sharing her reflections, she said these experiences ultimately made her stronger and more self-aware.
Shruti Haasan’s candid revelations highlight the importance of prioritizing mental health and personal growth, even amid the pressures of fame and career.
