Shiv Sagar: Blending Legacy, Innovation and Tradition to Redefine Mythological Storytelling

Mumbai: Shiv Sagar, head of Sagar World Multimedia, continues to carry forward one of India’s most iconic legacies in mythological storytelling. Coming from the legendary Sagar family—creators of timeless shows like Ramayan, Shri Krishna and Vikram Aur Betal—Shiv is now reshaping the genre with fresh ideas, modern technology and deep cultural roots.

Reflecting on his childhood, he recalls visiting the sets of Ramayan when he was just 10 years old. “Sometimes we even became junior artists when kids were not available or were too expensive,” he laughs. Back then, he didn’t realize the impact the show would have. “Now, when we look back, we see what a milestone it was for the entire country.”

He credits his grandfather, the late Dr. Ramanand Sagar, and the hardworking creative team for setting the foundation: “One cannot deny the awe and admiration for the people who worked day and night to make this possible.”

Today, Shiv continues the tradition with new mythological shows such as “Kakbhushundi Ramayan”, currently airing on DD National. The series explores the spiritual dialogue between Kakabhushundi and Garuda, both ardent devotees of Lord Rama. “When DD approached us to make Ramayan again, we were excited. The grace of Lord Ram has always been in the family. We know our job well and felt we could create something no one else could,” he says with pride.

Another recent project is “Kaamdhenu Gaumata,” a unique show focusing on the cultural and emotional significance of the cow in Indian society. “In India, a cow is not just an animal but an emotion,” he explains. However, shooting with a real cow brought challenges. “We bought a cow in Vadodara, but making her act was very difficult,” he shares. To solve this, the team created a 3D model for complex action and stunt sequences—an impressive mix of tradition and technology.

Shiv believes mythological content must evolve while staying rooted in authenticity. Rather than repeating old stories, he is committed to creating original, meaningful narratives that connect with modern audiences. His work honors the past while embracing the future.

As a torchbearer of one of India’s greatest storytelling legacies, Shiv Sagar is not just preserving mythology—he is reviving it with innovation, creativity and devotion, inspiring the next generation to celebrate the richness of Indian culture.
