Robotic system to deliver faster, more accurate diagnostics for critical care patients
Lucknow | In a major technological leap towards faster and more accurate healthcare delivery, Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) has inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s first fully automated laboratory in its Department of Pathology (Clinical Chemistry Section).
The advanced facility, based on Total Lab Automation (TLA) developed by global diagnostics leader Beckman Coulter, has the capability to perform over 4,000 tests per hour, ranging from basic blood work to highly specialized diagnostic tests. SGPGI now joins the league of India’s top medical institutions with such state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Before this automation upgrade, lab technicians manually prepared and sorted samples — a time-consuming process prone to human error. The new robot-assisted system ensures greater accuracy and faster turnaround times, drastically improving diagnosis and treatment outcomes, especially for patients needing urgent care.
Director Prof. R.K. Dhiman: “Timely Diagnosis, Better Care”
Speaking at the inauguration, Padma Shri awardee and SGPGI Director Prof. R.K. Dhiman emphasized,

“This upgrade is not just technological — it’s about transforming patient care. Accurate diagnosis at the right time can be life-saving. Our goal is to deliver world-class diagnostics with unmatched speed and precision.”

Enhanced Patient Benefits
For patients, the long and anxious wait for lab reports—especially during serious illness—can now be significantly reduced. The new lab ensures:
- Faster delivery of test results
- Minimized human error
- Consistent handling of all samples
- Doctors can begin critical treatment sooner
Moreover, with machines now managing repetitive tasks, lab specialists can focus on complex testing and medical research, enabling better services and medical breakthroughs.
A Symbol of Medical Modernization
Prof. Manoj Jain, Head of Pathology, hailed the initiative as a landmark in the state’s healthcare development, calling it “one of India’s most advanced laboratories.” He lauded Dr. Raghvendra, the lab in-charge, for his leadership in the transformation.
“This isn’t just about upgrading a lab—it symbolizes our shift towards smart, fast, and safer medical practices. Ultimately, our patients are the true beneficiaries,” added Prof. Jain.
The launch marks SGPGI’s continued commitment to providing world-class healthcare services, not only to the people of Uttar Pradesh but to patients from across India.
