Sensitisation Session on Transgender Rights and Inclusive Healthcare Held at King George’s Medical University

Lucknow: A sensitisation and orientation session on the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 and strengthening healthcare systems for the transgender community was successfully conducted at King George’s Medical University (KGMU).

The program was jointly organised by KGMU B.E.S.T and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), reflecting the institution’s commitment to fostering inclusive and equitable healthcare practices. The session was held under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Dr. Soniya Nityanand, whose vision continues to drive initiatives aimed at social responsibility and inclusivity.

The highlight of the program was an insightful address by Devika Devendra S Mangalamukhi, Member Advisor to the Uttar Pradesh Transgender Welfare Board, in collaboration with the National Institute of Social Defence, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

In her address,  Mangalamukhi elaborated on the key provisions of the Act and stressed the importance of creating a respectful, sensitive, and accessible healthcare environment for transgender individuals. She highlighted the crucial role of healthcare professionals in reducing stigma and ensuring equitable delivery of medical services.

The session witnessed active participation from over 100 faculty members, resident doctors, nursing staff, and employees from various departments, demonstrating a strong institutional commitment to inclusivity.

The event was coordinated through the dedicated efforts of Dr. Anjoo Agarwal and Dr. Rhythm.

The orientation marks a significant step towards sensitising healthcare providers and strengthening the healthcare system to better serve the transgender community in Uttar Pradesh, aligning with broader goals of equality and dignity in healthcare access.
