New Delhi –In a significant administrative reshuffle, senior IPS officer Sashi Bhushan Kumar Singh, widely known as SBK Singh, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, effective August 1, 2025. Singh, a 1988-batch officer, will take on this crucial responsibility in an additional capacity, serving as Commissioner while also holding his current post as Director General of Delhi Home Guards.
The appointment was approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday. Singh’s tenure as Commissioner comes with a unique timeline, as he is set to retire in just five months. He will succeed the outgoing Commissioner, Sanjay Arora, a 1988-batch IPS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, whose term concludes on July 31. Arora had taken over the charge from Rakesh Asthana on August 1, 2022.
A Career Marked by Extensive Experience
SBK Singh is an officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre. Originally from Bihar, he completed his early education at Sainik School Tilaiya in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. He then pursued higher studies at Delhi University, graduating from St. Stephen’s College in 1986. After becoming an IPS officer, he further enhanced his qualifications by earning an MBA with a specialization in Human Resource Management.

Over his career spanning more than 36 years, Singh has served in various key positions across Delhi and other Union Territories. He has also held the post of Director General of Police (DGP) in two different states.

Involved in High-Profile Cases and Tech Initiatives
Singh’s career is marked by his involvement in several high-profile cases. As Additional DCP South, he was a part of the Uphaar Cinema fire case investigation. As Additional CP EOW (Economic Offences Wing), he handled several cases related to land scams, and as Joint CP Crime, he was involved in the investigation of the high-profile Ponty Chadha murder case.

Beyond his direct policing duties, SBK Singh has also been a key figure in modernizing police functions. He was instrumental in developing a mobile application called ‘Lost Report’ and a web application named ‘Police Clearance Certificate’ during his tenure as Special Commissioner of Police (Intelligence). His vast experience in policing and internal security is expected to be a valuable asset to the Delhi Police force.
