Seamless Travel: Prayagraj to Be Level-Crossing free soon

Prayagraj

Prayagraj: The holy city of Prayagraj is abuzz with preparations for Maha Kumbh 2025, one of the world’s largest spiritual gatherings. As the banks of the Triveni Sangam take shape into a sprawling Kumbh Nagari, the arrival of sadhus, ascetics, and akharas adds to the festive fervor. Beyond the mela grounds, Prayagraj city is gearing up to host millions of devotees, with significant upgrades aimed at enhancing infrastructure and connectivity.

In a major boost to the city, Indian Railways, in collaboration with the State Bridge Corporation, is set to make Prayagraj free from level crossings before the Maha Kumbh. This transformation will not only ensure smoother train operations and reduced accidents but also relieve residents and visitors from prolonged traffic jams.

Easing Traffic Woes and Enhancing Train Operations

For Prayagraj residents, Maha Kumbh is not only a matter of pride but also a catalyst for development. With a combination of permanent and temporary projects, the city is witnessing a host of improvements that promise long-term benefits. Among the most noteworthy is the elimination of level crossings through the construction of Rail Over Bridges (ROBs) and Rail Under Bridges (RUBs).

These upgrades are a joint effort by the central and state governments under the leadership of the “double-engine” governance model, aimed at providing seamless train movement and decongesting the city’s roads.

Completion Timeline: Before Maha Kumbh 2025

According to Senior Public Relations Officer Amit Malviya from the Prayagraj Rail Division, construction is underway at nearly all level crossings within the city and its surrounding areas. While some ROBs and flyovers were completed during Kumbh 2019, the remaining projects are set to be finished ahead of Maha Kumbh 2025.

Key Projects: ROBs and RUBs in the Making

Malviya highlighted the extensive work being done at critical locations:

  • 7 ROBs under construction at areas like Begum Bazar, Bamrauli-Manohari, Chheoki, DDU-Prayagraj, Prayag-Fafamau, and Prayag-Prayagraj Junction. These are being built at a cost of approximately ₹375 crores.
  • 3 RUBs nearing completion at Prayag Yard, Jhunsi, and Andhava-Kanihar Road, with an investment of around ₹40 crores.

These structures will be operational before the event, ensuring smooth traffic flow for the millions of pilgrims attending Maha Kumbh, while also benefiting local residents by permanently eliminating traffic bottlenecks.

Seamless Operations During Maha Kumbh

The completion of these infrastructure projects will enable uninterrupted and safe train operations. The Prayagraj division is expected to manage the movement of nearly 10,000 trains during the Kumbh period. By eliminating level crossings, train schedules will face fewer interruptions, allowing for a more efficient transportation network.

A Lasting Legacy for Prayagraj

The upgrades under way are not just for Maha Kumbh; they are an investment in Prayagraj’s future. The ROBs and RUBs will ensure safer train movement, quicker commutes, and reduced congestion for years to come. As the city welcomes millions of pilgrims, these developments symbolize a harmonious blend of tradition and progress, making Maha Kumbh 2025 a landmark event in every sense.
